Crafting the Cloth
Wool is primarily derived from the fleece of sheep, though variants come from goats (cashmere, mohair), alpacas, and rabbits (angora). The fleece is sheared from the animal, scoured to remove natural grease (lanolin) and dirt, and then carded or combed to align the fibers. These fibers are spun into yarn and woven or knitted. The processing determines the final texture, ranging from scratchy, heavy tweeds to unbelievably smooth, superfine merino worsteds.
